Noida police on Saturday said they have detained four close associates and seized two vehicles of the fugitive politician accused of assaulting a woman and registered another FIR against him. The move comes despite the BJP distancing itself from Srikant Tyagi, who identified himself as the national executive member of the party’s Kisan Morcha and national co-convener of the Yuva Samiti.
Tyagi was booked on Friday under Indian Penal Code Section 354 (assault or use of criminal force on any woman, with intent to express anger or knowing it likely to outrage her modesty) over the altercation with a co-resident of his residence. Society in Sector 93B. The woman objected to Srikanth Tyagi planting some trees, claiming that he violated the rules even though he was within his rights to do so.
“We responded immediately after the episode came to light and an FIR was lodged accordingly. Today, during further investigation into the case, four close associates of Srikant Tyagi were detained for questioning,” Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Ranvijay Singh said. “The police team that went to the spot found three vehicles belonging to Tyagi. Two of them were found violating the Motor Vehicle Act. came and impounded them. The third vehicle, a Toyota Fortuner, had official Uttar Pradesh government insignia on it but was violating the rules.
A separate FIR has been lodged for misusing a government symbol,” Singh said. The official said that police teams are continuously conducting raids on Tyagi’s possible whereabouts and are making all-out efforts to arrest him at the earliest. He also clarified that no police security was provided to Tyagi by Gautam Buddha Nagar Commissionerate. Several videos of Friday’s episode have surfaced on social media, in which Tyagi is seen hurling abuses and beating up the woman. He also hurled abuse at her husband and made derogatory remarks about her.
Meanwhile, Gautam Buddha Nagar MP Mahesh Sharma and BJP’s Noida unit chief Mahesh Gupta visited the Grand Omax Society and met the local residents. He told the residents that Tyagi was not a member of the BJP and assured them of his party’s support. The Congress and Aam Aadmi Party in Uttar Pradesh criticized the BJP over the matter. At a press conference in Noida, Pankhuri Pathak of the Congress shared Tyagi’s photographs with senior BJP leaders as she accused the party of “anti-women” attitudes.
She also accused the BJP of “lying” about Tyagi’s association with the party. “Today the BJP is saying that Srikanth is not a member of Tyagi Party. But he was walking around with security personnel which MLAs or ministers did not have. One can imagine how much influence he had in this government,” said Pathak. AAP’s Gautam Buddha Nagar unit chief Bhupendra Jadoun has also shared photographs of Tyagi with senior BJP leaders and other documents to claim his links with the saffron party.
He also accused BJP of lying and spreading wrong information to save the member. Tyagi had told PTI on Friday evening that the woman’s claims were false and that she was the first to fight. He had also claimed that the matter was being popularized due to his connection with the BJP.
