Tripura BJP on Saturday elected state unit president Dr Manik Saha as the next chief minister of the north-eastern state, hours after Biplab Deb submitted his resignation to Governor SN Arya.

Saha, a dental surgeon by profession, has a clean image among the masses. Despite his break with the Congress, he enjoys wide acceptance in the party ranks and is known for his booth management skills.

Saha has also been the Head of the Department and Professor, Tripura Medical College and BR Ambedkar Memorial Teaching Hospital in Agartala, and currently serves as the President of the Tripura Cricket Association.

Deb took to Twitter to congratulate Saha on being elected as the new Chief Minister of Tripura.

In his first statement as the new chief minister, Saha said he would abide by “whatever responsibility is given to him by the party”. A big part of that responsibility will be to keep the herd together until the assembly elections next year.

A major reason for the BJP replacing another chief minister going up for election in a state was that Deb was not able to bring it under control.

Saha realized how challenging the task would be when Minister Ram Prasad Pal openly opposed his selection as CM, leading to a scuffle inside the party office.
