Tensions erupted after a brawl between members of two communities in the city of Arah in Bihar on Wednesday over a Facebook post in support of a controversial statement made by suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma about the Prophet Mohammad. A large police contingent has been deployed in the Ramgarhia area where the violence erupted on Tuesday night, said Bhojpur District Magistrate Raj Kumar, whose headquarters is at Arah.
According to the owner of a tea stall on the side of the road where the incident took place, a man who had come for a snack was accused by another person for a Facebook post, which showed sympathy for Sharma. The two young men quarreled for a while and then the person who had committed the crime on a social media post walked away, but a few minutes later returned with several others carrying sticks and rods.
The group went on a rampage, beating up a person posted on Facebook and beating up those who tried to intervene. No arrests have been made yet, the DM said, adding that a case has been registered and an investigation is underway.
