Krishna Lanka police has arrested a man for cheating by befriending 30 women in the city on the pretext of gold business. Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCP Vishal Gunni said gold jewelery weighing 97.5 grams was seized during his arrest on Thursday.
The accused has been identified as Shevuri Chandra (50) alias Vendeti Chandra. According to the police, Chandra has been cheating unmarried women for the past 12 years. He would first befriend the victims claiming to be a millionaire and call them on the pretext of gold business and give them expensive gifts like gold rings. He used to feed them food laced with sedatives and when they became unconscious, he would steal their gold ornaments and money and run away.
A native of Kota mandal in Nellore district, he left his parents’ home and started living on his own from an early age. He worked at Gudur for some time and then migrated to Tirupati where he settled. “He has been cheating women for the past 12 years. He cheated around 30 women in the cities of Chittoor, Tirupati, Nellore, Guntur, Vijayawada, Chennai and Eluru and was jailed in as many as eight cases,” the DCP said in a press conference at the Command Control Center in Labbipet.
According to the police, he escaped from jail twice. In January, he escaped from jail, reached Vijayawada and continued to rob women of their valuables and money. Similarly, in the month of July, he stole a necklace weighing 24 grams, two chains weighing eight grams and 20 grams, as well as rings and earrings of another woman and fled from there. The Krishna Lanka Police registered a case of a series of frauds in the area and started an investigation. They focused on finding similar crimes and began narrowing down suspects, officials said.
After investigation, officers learned that Chandra was said to be in Vijayawada to target another victim. The police started monitoring his movements.
