AIADMK leadership row: General Council rejects all 23 proposals; ops walk out MPNRC

New Delhi: A dramatic scene unfolded at Chennai’s Srivari Kalyan Mandapam during the AIADMK General Council meeting on Thursday, with senior party leaders throwing their weight behind opposition leader Edappadi Palaniswami (EPS) and supporting his demand for a “single leadership”. The dismay of rival and AIADMK chief coordinator O Panneerselvam (OPS).

The General Council rejected all 23 draft resolutions and also stated that the only demand of the Council was to introduce a system of single leadership for the party. It was also decided that a single leadership resolution would be passed in the next meeting of the council to be held on July 11. The process of passing 23 pre-determined resolutions was initiated soon after the meeting began, amid massive sloganeering by party workers. Earlier this morning, traffic on roads leading to Mandapam in Vanagaram came to a standstill as hundreds of party supporters gathered on the streets.

Meanwhile, the Madras High Court, in an order in the early hours of Thursday, restrained the party’s general council from adopting any new resolution on unitary leadership and said only 23 proposals already prepared by the party can be discussed and they can be adopted. in the meeting.

The Madras HC had also refused to stay the general council meeting on Wednesday. This raised hopes for the EPS, who hoped to elevate himself as the party’s general secretary. It is also important to note that the late party chief, J Jayalalithaa, was declared AIADMK’s eternal general secretary in 2017 to honor her memory and the party had then announced that no one else would be brought to that post.
