Opposition vice-presidential candidate Margaret Alva congratulated NDA’s Jagdeep Dhankhar for winning the polls on Saturday and noted that while the election is over, the fight to protect the Constitution, strengthen democracy and restore the dignity of Parliament will continue. She lashed out at some opposition parties for supporting the BJP “directly or indirectly” in this election and said it was an attempt to “destroy” the idea of a united opposition party.
Alva believed that such parties and leaders have damaged their own credibility by supporting the BJP in this election. “Congratulations to Mr. Dhankhar on being elected as Vice President! I would like to thank all the Leaders of Opposition and MPs of all parties who voted for me in this election. “Also, all the volunteers for their selfless service in our short tenure campaign,” said Dhankhar as the 14th Vice President of India. She said soon after being elected.Dhankhar, the former governor of West Bengal, got 528 votes while 80-year-old Alva got 182 votes.
