Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Wednesday said the Shiv Sena will continue on the Hindutva path amid attacks from his party allies on the issue, even as Rahul Gandhi, a prominent leader of his alliance partner Congress, recently Criticizing ideology. It only wants power.

In a joint letter on Wednesday, rebel leader Eknath Shinde and 33 other MLAs pointed out that the developments only intensify the contradictions in the alliance.

“Some are questioning our Hindutva. Shiv Sena and Hindutva are two sides of the same coin. Some allege that it is no longer Balasaheb Thackeray’s Shiv Sena. We are carrying the same thoughts as Balasaheb. Shiv Sena did a lot for Hindutva,” the CM said, countering the sentiments expressed by Shinde and others along with him.

However, Rahul Gandhi has repeatedly criticized Hindutva over the past few months, calling it separate from Hinduism. The Congress is a key ally in the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government of Maharashtra.

“Is Hinduism about beating a Sikh or a Muslim? Hinduism of course. Hinduism stands for Satya (Truth), Hindutva seeks power. Those who face challenges are Hindus and those who run away from problems out of fear follow Hindutva,” Rahul said at a Congress training camp last year.

He said that those who follow the ideology of Hindutva bow down before anyone.

“They bowed before the British and bowed before money because there is no truth in their heart,” said Rahul.

He also added on another occasion that India is a country of Hindus and not of ‘Hindutvawadis’ who will do anything to stay in power. “Since 2014, it is Hindutvawadis who are in power, not Hindus. We need to drive them out and bring Hindu rule. Mahatma Gandhi was a Hindu, and Godse was a Hindutvawadi,” the Congress MP said.

Eknath Shinde and 33 other MLAs in their letter on Wednesday highlighted such contradictions in the MVA alliance.

“There is huge dissatisfaction among the workers of our party, Shiv Sena, to form the government with NCP and Congress, who are ideologically opposed to our party. To gain power, the principles of our party have been compromised, which has a fierce ideological base. The ideology of our party leader Balasaheb Thackeray was not to compromise on the principle of Hindutva, which was defeated on day one by aligning it with opposing ideologies,” Shinde and others said in their letter.
