Hyderabad: Top BJP leader and Union Home Minister Amit Shah will address a public meeting in Hyderabad on Saturday to mark the conclusion of the second phase of party Telangana unit president Bandi Sanjay Kumar’s ‘padayatra’. BJP sources said Shah will visit the forensic science laboratory at Ramantapur in the city on Saturday before attending the rally.
The public meeting will be held on Saturday evening at Tukkuguda on the outskirts of the city. Union Minister G Kishan Reddy, who inspected the meeting place on Friday, exuded confidence that the BJP would come to power in the state.
BJP President JP Nadda had participated in a public meeting in Mahbubnagar on May 5 as part of Sanjay Kumar’s ‘padayatra’, while Union Minister Bhupendra Yadav and other senior leaders also participated in the march on foot. Amit Shah’s public meeting assumes political significance as the BJP is making a determined effort to emerge as an alternative to the ruling TRS in the state assembly elections due next year.
The BJP is buoyed by its successes in the by-elections to Dabak and Huzurabad assembly seats and the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) elections in 2020 and 2021.
The three main players in the state’s politics – the ruling TRS, the opposition BJP and the Congress – are making efforts to strengthen themselves to do well in next year’s assembly elections.
For the past several months, a war of words is going on between TRS and BJP on various issues. The TRS has been attacking the BJP and the NDA government at the Center for its alleged politics of polarization and failures on various fronts.
The ruling party is reaching out to the people at large through welfare and development programmes. Meanwhile, the Congress is also trying to revive its fortunes after facing major setbacks after the formation of separate Telangana in 2014.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had recently attended a public meeting on farmers’ issues in Warangal.
Sanjay Kumar had started the second leg of his foot march named ‘Praja Sangram Yatra’ from the temple town of Alampur on 14 April. He organized the first leg of his ‘padayatra’ last year.
