A pre-season friendly between Spanish side Atletico Madrid and Italian giants Juventus in Israel this weekend has been called off due to “security” concerns, both teams announced on Saturday.
The match was scheduled to take place at the Bloomfield Stadium in Tel Aviv on Sunday but a renewed escalation of hostilities in the region prompted promoters Comtech Group to call it off.

“Due to the latest developments, the scheduled friendly match between Atlético Madrid and Juventus in Israel has been cancelled,” Juventus said in a statement.
“Due to the current security situation, Comtec Group has announced that the match between Atletico Madrid and Juventus at Bloomfield Stadium tomorrow, Sunday 7 August, will not be played.”
Israel launched airstrikes on Gaza on Saturday and the Palestinian militant group responded with a barrage of rocket fire, in the worst escalation of violence in the region since last year.
Juventus open their Serie A campaign with a home tie against Sassuolo on August 15, while Diego Simeone’s Atletico will play their La Liga opener against Getafe on the same day.
