The 27-year-old Sable clocked 8:11.20 seconds to better his previous national record of 8:12.48 and finish behind Kenyan Abraham Kibiwot (8:11.15). Kenya’s Amos Serem won bronze with a time of 8:16.83.

Kibivot finished fifth in 8:28.95 at last month’s world championships in Eugene, USA, while Sable finished a disappointing 11th in 8:28.95, the lowest 3000m steeplechase time in the showpiece’s history.

With the silver medal, Sable made amends for a disappointing performance at the World Championships.

A farmer’s son from Mandwa village in Maharashtra’s Beed district, he had the satisfaction of finishing sixth in 8:34.96 to world championship bronze medalist Consecellus Kipruto of Kenya.

Sable, who served on the Siachen Glaciers before turning to athletics, has been breaking national records in recent times. He clocked 8:12.48 in fifth place at the prestigious Diamond League meet in Rabat last month.
