What do you want in exchange for a cheese grilled sandwich? Well, a couple was lucky to have had a fortune of wealth. So, a Canadian painting by folk artist Maude Lewis has been sold at auction for $270,000 (over Rs 2 crore) on Tuesday. The interesting part is the story of how the current owners of the painting got hold of it, in the first place. Well, the Canadian couple got a Lewis painting 50 years ago in exchange for a grilled cheese sandwich.

The painting’s owner, Irene Demas, worked at the time as a young chef at a restaurant she and her husband owned. Except for a regular sandwich lover, his customers now paid for the food. The spouses had an agreement with an artist, John Kinnear, who would pay for their meals with paintings done by him and even his friends. One day, The Guardian reports, when Kinnear came to dinner back in 1973, he brought with him a painting of Maude Lewis—a close friend of his. Demas chose the now-iconic “Black Truck” painting for Kinnear in lieu of a grilled cheese sandwich.

Talking about the painting deal in exchange for the sandwich, Demas said, “Mind, it wasn’t just a simple grilled cheese. This was a great sandwich, with five-year-old cheddar and beautiful bread.”

The painting titled “Black Truck” by Lewis, which hung in Damas’ home for 5 decades, has now sold for 10 times its value, displaying a trend that has seen the Canadian artist’s work rise in popularity .

Lewis used to sell his paintings by the roadside in Nova Scotia, Canada. Her signature style received no critical acclaim when she was alive. The artist died in 1970 and only decades after her death, she rose to fame. A film based on his life ‘Maudi’ was also released in 2016.

In a series of letters, which were also auctioned off, Lewis thanked the shearers for their kindness and generosity in their supply of paint and finished boards. The three handwritten letters yielded $70,000 in Canadian dollars.
