Intensifying its probe into the Paradip port bribery case, the Central Bureau of Investigation has arrested a businessman’s son and sent him to four-day judicial custody.
The accused, identified as Charachit Mishra, is the son of Mahima Mishra, Managing Director of Orissa Stevedores Limited (OSL). Charachit is also the director of the company and due to his arrest, his brother Chandan has also come under suspicion.
While the CBI will probe him further in the bribery case, the court has asked the Central Bureau of Investigation to give Charchit his medicines and follow his diet after his medical examination.
The problems of the managing director of OSL seem to be increasing. The CBI is probing the father-son duo in the Rs 25 lakh bribery case in Paradip Port Conveyor Belt repair work. The agency has detained Charchit and builder Shishir Das till August 9.
CBI also arrested Shankh Shubha Mitra from Kolkata, who was remanded in CBI custody till August 9. After a marathon interrogation of 20 hours, Mahima again appeared before the CBI.
Charachit’s lawyer Jaideep Pal said, “According to the FIR he has been named as an accused; We produced him before the CBI. We will apply for bail. He has been charged under Sections 7, 8, 9, 10 and 12 of the Prevention of Corruption Act and Section 120B of the IPC.
“Das has no involvement in the case. Purchased land from him as a builder. He did not know the source of the money and is not involved in the case,” said lawyer Santosh Kumar Lenka, who represented Das.
According to the CBI, Saroj Das, a mechanical engineer at Paradip port, was taking huge bribes from different companies like OSL for transporting goods. Sumant, Sankh Subhan Mitra, Devpriya Mohanty were working as intermediaries in this bribery transaction. Conveyor belt of Paradip port was damaged by OSL during cargo movement. It would have cost crores to repair it.
Saroj Das took charge of its repair work and along with Sumant, Sankh Shubh and Charachit conspired to repair it from Paradip port. Saroj Das demanded a bribe of Rs 60 lakh for this. Sumant received Rs 25 lakh from OSL on August 3 at Cuttack. Apart from this, Sumant gave Shishir Das an advance of Rs.10 lakhs.
CBI has so far arrested six people in this case. The question is whether the investigation is only about the Rs 25 lakh bribe case or there is some bigger scam.
