New Delhi: Hollywood star Chris Hemsworth, who is popular for portraying the Norse god of thunder, Thor, has showered praise on Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu, saying “she deserves his MCU character’s hammer”. The accolade came after Chanu recently won India’s first gold medal at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham.

She lifted 201 kg in the women’s 49 kg category final to win the gold medal.

After her win, Chanu shared a celebratory tweet that was quoted by a social media user, who tagged Hemsworth saying, “Time for Thor to drop his hammer Chris Hemsworth.” The actor took note of the tweet and quickly responded by writing, “She deserves it. Congratulations, Saikhom, you are a legend.” Chanu expressed his gratitude by sharing, “Thank you so much @chrishemsworth always love to see you.”

In the Marvel Comics and its accompanying cinematic universe, Thor’s hammer Mjolnir is a magical weapon that can only be wielded by its merit. Hemsworth’s tweet went viral on the micro-blogging platform as the actor’s fans and followers praised him for Chanu’s remarkable performance at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

“Now that’s a ‘wonderful’ gesture for an Indian sportsperson from a Marvel Studios actor in tinsel town,” wrote one user.

As for her gold-winning performance, in her first attempt in the snatch category, Chanu got off to a good start and successfully lifted 84 kg. Chanu successfully lifted the required 88 kg weight in seconds. She gave her personal best while representing India. In the final attempt of the snatch, the Tokyo Olympic silver medalist failed to lift 90 kg in a show of tremendous strength.

In the clean and jerk lift category, Chanu showed tremendous strength by lifting 109 kg in her first attempt. In her second attempt, she lifted 113 kg. In her final attempt in this event, she failed to lift 115 kg but did not fail to win India’s first gold medal in this multi-sport event in 2022.
