New Delhi: Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday linked Congress leaders’ black-clad protests over inflation and unemployment to the party’s “appeasement” politics, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his opposition to the foundation-laying of the Ram temple on this day in 2020.

Speaking to reporters at the Parliament complex, Shah said Congress leaders had seen the protest in regular clothes of late but chose black clothes especially for Friday’s protest because Modi had peacefully resolved the 550-year-old dispute over Ram Janmabhoomi in Ayodhya. On this day, his ‘shilanyas’ was done.

He noted that the construction of the temple, which is the center of faith of crores of people, is now in full swing.

The ED action and inflation issues are mere pretexts, Shah claimed, adding that the Congress chose to express its opposition by protesting the foundation-laying ceremony and the ongoing construction of the temple in black clothes.

He said that since the opposition parties could not dare to speak openly on the issue, they had given a hidden message of their stand against the foundation and construction of the temple.

“I clearly believe that the Congress has chosen August 5 to hold strong protests in black clothes to show its opposition on the temple issue,” he said.

The home minister said the Congress is not ready to give up its “politics of appeasement” despite losing several elections.

He noted that since the monsoon session of Parliament last month, the Congress has been protesting against its leaders on issues such as the Enforcement Directorate’s action and inflation. He asked what is special today, and no ED action was taken on Friday.

“On this day, Modi laid the foundation stone of the temple at Ram Janmabhoomi, the center of faith for millions of people. The dispute has not been resolved for more than 550 years and Congress, which has been in power for most of the post-independence period, has done nothing to resolve it. Modi worked for a peaceful settlement and laid the foundation stone of the temple… today is a holy day,” Shah said.

The politics of appeasement has done the country a lot of damage since independence and all parties should abandon it, he said.

Dressed in black, Congress leaders took to the streets against inflation and unemployment, many of them, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, were detained by the police for about six hours.
