Three Russian officials won a court ruling on Thursday to reverse the course of this weekend’s International Weightlifting Federation elections.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld the appeal of Maxim Agapitov, who is a member of the IWF board, Dmitry Chernogorov and Alexander Kishkin. All three were ousted from the polls last month by a panel examining potential candidates.

The CAS said in a statement that the IWF-appointed panel did not have the authority to effectively take disciplinary decisions against the Russians.

Although Russian teams and athletes have been banned from many international competitions due to the country’s part in the war in Ukraine, the International Olympic Committee and most Olympic Games have not suspended their members from Russia.

The CAS’s decision at a two-day election meeting in the Albanian capital Tirana should allow three people to run for different IWF positions, including president.

The election is the IWF’s first since an investigation aired in January 2020 by the German channel ARD alleges widespread corruption.

Long-time IWF president, Tamas Ajan, a former member of the IOC, was ousted weeks later on charges of financial misconduct and tampering with the sport’s anti-doping program.

A separate CAS panel had last week banned Azaan from the game for life.

The elections later this week are crucial for the IWF in rebuilding confidence in the IOC. Weightlifting has been taken out of the sporting program for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, with the IOC due to make a final decision next year.
