CWG 2022: Priyanka Goswami and Avinash Sable win silver in race walk, steeplechase MPNRC News

Birmingham: Priyanka Goswami won silver in the 10,000m race walk while Avinash Sable finished second in the steeplechase at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham on Saturday. Goswami created history as she became the first Indian woman to win a medal in race walking. Sable broke his own national record to win silver in the men’s 3000m steeplechase.

With the two silvers, the Indian athletics team’s medal tally rose to four at the 2018 Games in Gold Coast, where the country won gold, silver and bronze medals each in track and field.

Goswami clocked a personal best of 43:38.83 seconds to finish second behind Australia’s Jemima Montag (42:34.30). Kenya’s Emily Wamusi Ngi (43:50.86) took bronze.

President Draupadi Murmu congratulated Priyanka Goswami: “Congratulations to Priyanka Goswami for winning a silver medal in running at the #CommonwealthGames. You have opened a new chapter of success by becoming the first Indian woman to win a medal in race walking. Your feat will inspire millions, especially our girls.”

Sable, a farmer’s son and armyman from Mandwa village in Maharashtra’s Beed district, showed satisfaction as he beat World Championship bronze medalist Consecellus Kipruto of Kenya to finish sixth with a time of 8:34.96.

The President also conveyed her best wishes to Sable: “Congratulations to Avinash Sable for winning silver medal in steeplechase at the #CommonwealthGames. You are constantly raising your level of performance which is a motivating aspect of your success. I wish you all the best in your future endeavors.”

Another Indian in the fray, Bhavna Jat finished eighth and last with a personal best time of 47:14.13. Harminder Singh was the first Indian to win a Race Walk – Bronze – medal in the 20km event in Delhi at the 2010 CWG.
