A Delhi court on Wednesday allowed a prisoner serving a sentence for murder to appear in the All India Law Entrance Test (AILET) to be conducted by the National Law University (NLU) on June 26.

The counsel for the petitioner submitted that the accused had applied for AILET exam to pursue BA, LLB (Hons).

Vacation Judge Chandrashekhar of Rouse Avenue Court said that as per law, right to education is a fundamental right and judicial record shows that a similar request made by the accused last year was allowed by the court concerned. “Therefore, it appears to be in the interest of justice,” the court said.

The court directed the Jail Superintendent of Dasana Jail, where applicant Shashank Jadon is presently lodged, to make necessary arrangements to ensure his presence at the examination centre. They are also directed to allow the accused to carry the required documents as mentioned on the admit card as “Instructions to the candidates”. The court further directed the superintendent to file a compliance report of its order on June 28.

Opposing the petition, the Public Prosecutor sought time to file a reply in the matter. However, the court said that the CBI has not filed any reply to the earlier notice in the matter and there is no point in giving it any more time to file its reply.
