Lyudmila Samsonova of Russia saved four set points in the first set to beat second seed Emma Raducanu of Great Britain 7-6 (6), 6-1 in the quarterfinals of the City Open in Washington on Friday. Samsonova, the US Open champion, missed two opportunities to win the first set, serving at 4-5. Radukanu took a 6-4 lead in the tiebreaker but lost the next four points.
Samsonova won her second career WTA Tour final. She finished runner-up at the 2021 German Open. Samsonova’s semi-final opponent will be China’s Shiu Wang, who defeated fourth seed Victoria Azarenka of Belarus 6-1, 6-3.
Sixth seed Kaya Kanepi of Estonia defeated Anna Kalinskaya of Russia 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-3. Kanepi will next face Australia’s Daria Saville, who defeated Canada’s Rebecca Marino 6-1, 7-5. Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic
Sixth seed Coco Gough was unable to overcome Japan’s Naomi Osaka in the second round, beating second seed Paula Badosa of Spain 7-6 (4), 6-2 in the quarterfinals in San Jose, California.
Badosa is into her fourth semifinal of the year as she looks to win her first tournament title since prevailing in Sydney, Australia in mid-January. Her semifinal opponent will be Russian seventh seed Daria Kasatkina, who overcame the fourth seed. Aryana Sabalenka of Belarus 4-6, 7-5, 6-0.
On the other half of the bracket, Shelby Rogers won an all-US match against Amanda Anisimova 6-4, 6-4. In the semifinals, Rogers will face ninth-seeded Veronika Kudermetova of Russia, who defeated third-seeded Ones Jaber of Tunisia 7-6 (5), 6-2.
