Imtiaz Ali is one of the most famous filmmakers in Bollywood. The 51-year-old has delivered several blockbusters over the years and has built a huge fan base. Critics and fans have noted that the female characters in Ali’s films are always well written.
The rockstar director is often asked how he writes female characters in his films. In a recent interview with Vice, Imtiaz Ali opened up about the roles of women. “I am fascinated by women in roles that are more oppressed and deprived than men and yet have a smile and grace on their faces,” Ali said. The famous filmmaker also added that women are “smarter than men”.
Imtiaz Ali said that his film Highway and web series were about “women finding their agency”. However, Ali added that not every story can have a single premise. “Not every story can be about a woman seeking agency,” Ali said. Why am I not allowed to mix stories of different formats or do they mean something different? I am not here to tell people how to live their lives.”
Imtiaz Ali wrote the super hit movie Cocktail. Directed by Homi Adjania, the film starred Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone and Diana Penty in lead roles.
Ali also talked about cocktails and revealed his inspiration for the film’s story. The versatile filmmaker said he was fascinated to learn about the western girls he met in London who were more keen to follow traditional practices than the Indian girls. So, Ali wrote the story of two girls, one with a Western upbringing and the other with a very traditional Indian upbringing.
Imtiaz Ali is known for directing films like Socha Na Tha, Jab We Met, Love Aaj Kal and Highway. The filmmaker has often tried to portray the complexities and dynamics of relationships through his films. Recently, Imtiaz Ali created an out-of-the-box web-series for OTT platform SonyLiv.
