A charcoal-laden truck caught fire on Thursday morning on the busy Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway in Maharashtra. The truck driver jumped in time and escaped safely, he said, adding that vehicular movement on the route was disrupted for a few hours.
A fire brigade official said that the vehicle caught fire at around 6.15 am near Charoti toll naka in Manor area of Palghar district when it was on its way from Mumbai to Ahmedabad in Gujarat. Local firefighters and police reached the spot after being alerted, but by then the truck was completely gutted, he said.
An official of Manor police station said that the driver of the vehicle jumped out safely. He said the traffic on the busy route was affected for two hours.
Later the fire was brought under control and the vehicle was pulled from the spot, he said. A fire brigade official said they suspect a short-circuit in the truck caused the fire, but the exact cause is yet to be ascertained.
