India ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams registered comprehensive victories in the seventh round of the open division of the 44th Chess Olympiad here on Friday.
Grandmasters Arjun Erigaisi and SL Narayanan defeated Abhijeet Gupta and Abhimanyu Puranik as India ‘A’, the second seeds, edged India ‘C’ 3-1.
Teenage GM D Gukesh continued his dream run to record his seventh straight win in the tournament, defeating Cuban GM Carlos Albornoz Cabrera to lead India ‘B’ to a 3.5-0.5 victory.
This is the sixth win in seven rounds for the team that also includes GMs R Pragnanandaa, Nihal Sarin and B Adhiban.
The top-seeded USA leads 2-1 against Armenia, who are leading the group after six rounds with multiple wins.
In the women’s section, leaders – India ‘A’, top seeds, saw their best player Koneru Hampi lose to Azerbaijan’s Gune Mammadzada, while D Harika drew with Khanim Balajiyeva and Tania Sachdev and R Vaishali defeated Ulviyya Fataliyeva and Govar Bedullayeva. 2.5-1.5 to set up a win.
The come-from-behind win saw India ‘A’ play four more rounds and extended their winning streak to seven.
India ‘B’ lost 1.5-2.5 to Greece as Vantika Agarwal and Soumya Swaminathan suffered losses, but hosts ‘C’ took a 2.5-0.5 lead against Switzerland thanks to Isha Karavade and PV Nandidha.
