Captain Ben Stokes announced on Wednesday that Jamie Overton will make his England Test debut in the third and final match of the New Zealand series at Headingley.

Overton replaced fellow pacer James Anderson after England’s all-time leading Test wicket-taker was ruled out with an ankle injury.

England took an unassailable 2-0 lead against the world Test champions after five-wicket wins at Lord’s and Trent Bridge.

Jamie Overton’s selection for the match starting Thursday means his twin brother Craig has been missed.

“Unfortunately Jimmy hasn’t done as well as we would have liked, so Jamie Overton is going to make his debut this week,” Stokes told Sky Sports.

“It’s unfortunate for Jimmy, but we’ve got a big test against India as well. I’m not sure how serious that is to be honest. He just has a bloated ankle.

“Jamie has been very impressive, the way he has bowled. We have always wanted to make a difference in our team, bowl at serious pace and change the game too.”

He continued: “That’s the only change this week. As tempting as it was to take out the twins while playing for England, Jamie was the only change.”

Stokes was absent from the practice nets on Tuesday after feeling unwell, delaying his trip to Leeds as a precaution but he joined the group on Wednesday.
