Mumbai: A 23-year-old youth was seriously injured after a mob attacked him with sharp weapons in Maharashtra’s Ahmednagar district, accusing him of supporting Bharatiya Janata Party’s Nupur Sharma on social media, police said on Saturday. Four main accused have been arrested in connection with the incident that took place on August 4. A senior official said it was premature to say anything about the motive behind the attack as the investigation was in its preliminary stages.

The man, identified as Pratik alias Sunny Rajendra Pawar, was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital with injuries to his head and other parts of the body, a police officer said. On Thursday evening, 14 people from the Muslim community attacked Pawar with swords, sickles, sticks and hockey sticks in front of a medical shop at Akkabai Chowk in Karjat town, 222 km from Ahmednagar district headquarters.

The incident took place when Pawar and Amit Mane, the complainants in this case, were going to an event on their two-wheeler and were waiting for a friend near a medical shop. While he was waiting for his friend, some men from the Muslim community approached him on a bike. According to the First Information Report (FIR), they had a sword, a sickle and a hockey stick.

According to Mane’s complaint filed on Friday, one of them shouted and attacked Pawar, saying he wrote a social media post in support of Nupur Sharma and posted an Instagram status after Kanhaiya Lal.

Kanhaiya Lal was killed by two Muslim men in Udaipur in June for sharing a social media post in support of former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma, whose comments on the Prophet Mohammad sparked a huge controversy. The assailants threatened Pawar that they would do the same to Umesh Kolhe. Citing the FIR, the officer said that one of the attackers stabbed Pawar in the eye.

Kolhe, a chemist, was killed in Maharashtra’s Amravati district for allegedly supporting Nupur Sharma on social media. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is investigating the case.
After Pawar was injured, Mane called two of his friends and they admitted Pawar to a government hospital. A senior police officer said it was premature to link the attack to Pawar’s social media posts.
“Although Pawar’s social media post in support of Nupur Sharma is mentioned (in the complaint), it is too early to talk about it as the investigation is on,” he said.

He said that Pawar has a criminal background and two cases are pending against him. Pawar had earlier also been given an extension of time for his criminal activities. “During the investigation so far, we have not come across any social media post of Pawar supporting Nupur Sharma. We are checking all his social media accounts including Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp,” said another police officer.

He said the victim had some old enmity with members of a gang, which may have led to the attack. An FIR was registered against 14 persons under Sections 307 (attempt to murder), 143 (being members of an unlawful assembly), rioting, 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to incite disorder). peace) under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, and arrested the four main accused.

Condemning the incident, BJP MLA Nitesh Rane said Pawar was accosted by 10 to 15 men from the Muslim community, who questioned him as to why he was keeping Nupur Sharma’s photo as a DP and asking others to do the same.

“Pratik Pawar received 35 stitches (during treatment) after the attack. He is fighting for his life,” he claimed. “I want to warn that if Hindus are targeted in this way, our hands are not tied. We will not rest until all the accused are arrested. Some of them are still absconding. Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is monitoring the matter. The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government and Minority Affairs Minister Nawab Malik are no longer in power. Those who attack Hindus will be given a befitting reply. We follow BR Ambedkar’s constitution. There is no Sharia law in this country,” he told reporters in Mumbai.

Union Minister Narayan Rane’s son Nitesh has also claimed to have insulted Hindu deities on social media.
