World number three Rafael Nadal, who has not played since suffering a stomach ache at Wimbledon last month, has withdrawn from next week’s ATP tournament in Montreal, he said on Twitter on Friday.
The announcement dealt a major blow to the Spaniard’s hopes of being fully fit for the US Open, which starts in New York at the end of the month.

“Since I returned to training, everything has been fine this week. “Four days ago I started working on my serve and after training yesterday I had a little discomfort that is still there today,” Nadal tweeted in Spanish.
“We have decided not to go to Montreal and continue the training session without forcing ourselves.
“I have no choice at this point but to be prudent and consider my health.”
The 36-year-old, who is a five-time winner in Montreal, has not played since withdrawing from his Wimbledon semi-final with Nick Kyrgios after failing to recover from an abdominal tear he suffered in the quarter-finals.
In the absence of Novak Djokovic at Flushing Meadows, the latest in a long string of injuries, Nadal will look to add to his record 22 Grand Slam titles.
Before his latest setback, he had already missed 11 Grand Slam tournaments since his debut in 2003.
