New Delhi: Bharatiya Kisan Union leader Rakesh Tikait has said that his farmers’ group will start a campaign from August 7 against the Centre’s new army recruitment scheme. Addressing a farmers’ meeting in Baghpat district of western Uttar Pradesh recently, Tikait said the issue of “fighting the Center and the UP government” was yet to begin.

“The campaign against the Agnipath scheme will start from August 7 and will continue for more than a week,” said the BKU national spokesperson, seeking support from the farming community.

He also alleged that old police cases against farmers are being dug up to intimidate them in the wake of major agitations in recent years.

“When the BJP government was formed in Uttar Pradesh, the cases against BJP members were closed. So, either they should be ready for lawsuits or we are ready for agitation,” Tikait said.

“People of Lucknow and Delhi should listen carefully to this,” he said.

“You can break political parties, separate leaders from farmers’ groups, but you cannot break farmers. Farmers will protest against you (both governments). Addressing the crowd of hundreds of farmers, Tikait highlighted issues such as land acquisition, electricity rates and sugarcane arrears. Tikait gained national prominence during the 2020-21 protests in Delhi against the now repealed Central Agriculture Act.
