Marking the directorial debut of R Madhavan, Rocketry: The Nambi Effect The film made headlines with its premiere at the recently held Cannes Film Festival. With the film releasing worldwide next week on July 1, here are 5 things you should know about the biographical drama.

The film is based on the real-life events of Nambi Narayanan, a former scientist and aerospace engineer with the Indian Space Research Organization, who was falsely accused of being a spy and arrested in 1994. Despite being independent, he is still fighting for justice. Those police officers alleged that they falsely implicated him, yet he is free.

Who was Nambi Narayanan,

Padma Bhushan Nambi Narayanan was accused of violating India’s official secret law, corruption and other crimes in the infamous 1994 espionage case. Though he was later acquitted by the CBI court and the Supreme Court in 1998, he along with fellow scientist D Sasikumar and four others spent a total of 50 days in jail.

In his autobiography, Orbits of Memories, Nambi described the espionage case as a conspiracy against himself and ISRO through the collective efforts of agents of the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) with the assistance of Indian police and intelligence officers. He said in the book that the case was made out of thin air to prevent India’s rapid progress in the development of indigenous cryogenic rocket engines.

Madhavan’s directorial debut

The film is the directorial debut of Vikram Vedha Star who also stars in the titular role. During the shooting of the film, Madhavan wore the director’s cap as the director left the film without completing it.
