Sanjay Manjrekar feels that India should keep Deepak Hooda in the team for the upcoming T20 World Cup. The former India cricketer praised Hooda for an outstanding IPL season where he scored 451 runs for Lucknow Super Giants. Despite his consistent performances in the IPL, Hooda failed to get a chance in the XI for the South Africa T20Is. Strong comebacks from Hardik Pandya and Dinesh Karthik made things a bit tricky for Hooda as India have a jam-packed middle order with many players knocking on the door for a place in the XI.

However, Hooda has a chance to show his mettle on the tour of Ireland if he manages to make it to the XI. This tour will be crucial for Hooda to strengthen his claim for the T20 World Cup.

However, Manjrekar feels that Hooda should get a chance in the Ireland series as he was at his best during IPL 2022 where he batted with a lot of responsibility in the middle order.

“I am looking forward to getting a look at him in this (Ireland) series because I felt we saw the best of Deepak Hooda in this last IPL. He has been around for a long time and you have seen his work and sporadic demonstrations of his ability. Last IPL, he came of age,” Sanjay Manjrekar replied to News18 CricketNext’s query in a select media interaction organized by Sony Sports Network ahead of Ireland’s tour of India.

Hooda made his international debut earlier this year in ODIs against West Indies, where he played some important innings. He was also included in the T20I series against Sri Lanka where he got only one chance to bat and scored 21 runs off 16 balls.

IPL 2022 proved to be a turning point for Hooda as it was the first time a franchise had put extra faith in his ability and carried him up the batting order. He scored four half-centuries in 15 matches and played a key role in Lucknow reaching the playoffs.

Manjrekar also feels that Hooda with his off-spin can do well for India in critical conditions on dry pitches.

“You always need guys who can make room as a batsman but can chip in with a few overs. On the dry pitch, Hooda can be put to good use.

The former cricketer backed Hooda for a place in the XI for the tour of Ireland as he feels India need a player like him in the batting order who can shift gears with big hits in the slog overs.

“India need someone down the order like him, it’s a very difficult job and Hood has done a great job in the IPL. He is someone I would definitely look up to India. If they weren’t part of their plans, I’m hoping the guys who did really well in that series against South Africa take a break and start looking at these guys and give them a long rope.”
