Chennai: Southern Railway on Friday said it has saved ₹ 54.99 crore by using alternative energy to reduce its carbon footprint.
With generation of 91.56 million units of wind power resulting in cumulative savings of ₹ 48.54 crore, Southern Railway said it has generated 16.30 million units of solar power through solar power from 2017 to July 2022, saving ₹ 6.45 crore.
“Construction of windmills has enabled substantial energy savings”, Southern Railway said in a press release. Since the installation of solar power plants in 2017-18, a cumulative solar power of 16.30 million units has been generated till June 2022, saving Rs 6.45 crore.
Solar power panels have been installed at various locations across the region and Southern Railway said it is working towards increasing the capacity of solar projects.
Famous Dr. MGR Chennai Central railway station has become the first station in the region to meet 100 percent of its daily power requirement through solar energy. Through windmill plants installed in Tuticorin districts, Southern Railway said it has utilized 91.56 million units by July 2022, resulting in savings of ₹ 48.54 crore.
