The R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo rained runs as Sri Lanka locked horns in the first Test of the two-match series with India from 2 August to 6 August 1997. The game witnessed many famous records by batsmen from both sides. Colombo made the most of the batting friendly pitch.

This was followed by Arvinda de Silva, who became the sixth centurion of this match. Aravinda scored 126 runs to take Sri Lanka to their highest score of 952 in Test cricket. The game, featuring some of the best batsmen from both India and Sri Lanka, remained a draw.
