Top surfers including Srishti Selvam, Sugar Banarase, Satish Saravanan and Sophia Sharma qualified for the semifinals after two rounds of challenging surf at the Covelong Classic here on Friday.
In the women’s open category, Srishti Selvam, Sugar Banarase, Ananya Samhita, Sophia Sharma, Kamali P and Mariel Wunderink have qualified for the semi-finals on August 7. Srishti Selvam, Sugar Banarase and Kamali P topped their respective categories. semi-finals
Round 1 of the men’s open category saw 12 intense surfing. The top two surfers from each heat will join the top 16 in the Mahabs Point Break Challenge held for Round 2 earlier this week where they will compete in 10 heats for a spot in Round 3.
The competition promises to be exciting and will test the endurance of the surfers as they will have to compete in several rounds before reaching the semi-finals. The second and third rounds will be held on Saturday.
The Men’s International Open featured surfers from Sri Lanka and the Maldives competing with top Indian surfers. Round 1 was held in 5 heats with the top 2 surfers in each heat qualifying directly for Round 3 while the 3rd and 4th placed surfers would have a second chance to compete again in Round 2.
Lakshitha Madushan Dalugoda Archige (Sri Lanka), Satish Saravanan (India), Lesitha Prabhath Koku Hannadige (Sri Lanka), Kanpathi Ramesh Jai Halar (Sri Lanka) and Praneet Sadruwan Pincha Baduge (Sri Lanka) topped their respective heats.
Favorite in the boys category of Groms (16 and under), Kishore Kumar reached the quarter-finals with the highest score (9.0). Naveen Kumar R qualified from the second quarter final with 12.0 points to top position. He will join Tain Arun (10.34), Thendral R (10.10), Lokesh S (7.50), Kalapathy S (6.53), Kiranjith Kumar (6.16) and Jeevannathan I (5,47) in the semifinals.
To promote the sport of surfing among children, the eighth edition of Covelong Surf introduced a beginner (12 and under) category to promote surfing among children. A total of 8 surfers competed in this event, out of which Prahlad Sriram (14.40), Thanishka Mendon (9.53), Yudhveer Mahajan (9.33) and Harish P (8.83) have qualified for the finals on Sunday.
