Tottenham Hotspur underlined their identity as a team capable of challenging for the Premier League title with a confident 4-1 victory over Southampton to continue their campaign on Saturday.
The hosts fell behind to a James Ward-Prowse volley in the 12th minute, but goals from Ryan Sessegnon, Eric Dier and Dejan Kulusevski sealed victory.

Southampton’s lead lasted just nine minutes as Sessegnon equalized with a header from Kulusevski’s cross past Southampton’s Premier League debutant keeper Gavin Bazunu.
Dier pounced on Son Heung-min’s cross to put Tottenham ahead in the 31st minute and the hosts might have missed the mark before the interval.
Mohamed Salisu turned Emerson Royal’s cross into his own net in the 61st minute and two minutes later Royal set up the impressive Kulusevski to guide a superb finish beyond Bazunu, whose defense kept the points respectable.
It was a statement from Tottenham, who didn’t even need the usual goalscoring contributions of last season’s Premier League Golden Boot winner Son or Harry Kane – both of whom had plenty of chances to open their tally for the season.
Tottenham ended the match in cruise control and manager Antonio Conte introduced second-half substitutes Ivan Perisic and Yves Bissauma.
Midfielder Bissauma enjoyed a lively cameo, receiving a yellow card and then almost scoring in the final minute.
