Uber refutes reports of exit from India market, may sell India business MPNRC

Uber on Thursday denied a report that claimed the ride-hailing major planned to exit the Indian market and in discussions with potential buyers to sell its India business.

Bloomberg reported that the US-based company explored selling the India business, but “suspended discussions after tech startup valuations deteriorated.”

In a statement shared with IANS, an Uber spokesperson said the company never discovered an exit from India – not even for a minute – and the report is “clearly false.”

“India today is as important to Uber as it was nine years ago when we launched. We are serving riders and drivers in over 100 cities, aggressively hiring Indian talent, and planning for the next decade and beyond,” said a company spokesperson.

Uber competes with SoftBank-backed Ola in the country.

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said in April that it would expand its product and team in India.

“We continue to expand the product offering for the Indian consumer. Be it autos, motos or high-capacity vehicles or rentals, India has always been a huge part of the Uber journey,” he said during the virtual i3 summit organized by Times Bridge.
