Ukraine said on Thursday it was “waiting for the green light” to receive EU candidacy status as European leaders met in Brussels to discuss Kyiv’s future four months into the Russian invasion.

“We are waiting for the green light, Ukraine has acquired candidate status,” Ukrainian presidential chief Andrey Yermak said on Telegram.

He said Ukraine aims for “full membership in the European Union”.

“We will be ready to start implementing the plan from the European Commission to start negotiations on this.”

Yermak called the EU summit “historic”.

Ukraine has demanded that her candidacy status be extended since the invasion of Moscow in late February, especially with fighting raging in the country’s east.

In 2014 Ukraine witnessed a pro-EU revolution that overthrew the Moscow-backed government.

The European Commission-backed candidacy is expected to be widely accepted, although some countries are not enthusiastic about it.

The accession process is likely to take years, if not decades.
