West Bengal faced a beer crisis in the month of May, leading to complaints from buyers that more than one brand of beer was not available. Not only this, ‘no beer’ sign boards were also seen hanging at some shops. Excise department officials at that time estimated that there would be record beer sales in the state and as predicted, the state earned record sales by selling beer during the scorching summer months.
There are now around 4,500 beer shops across the state. According to the Excise Department, a certain number of beers had to be supplied to these off-shops across the state due to the summer beer crisis. The Excise Department of West Bengal State had generated huge amount of revenue in the state in the last financial year. However, the Excise Department earned the most by selling local liquor.
Excise officials believe that sales of beer this year may exceed the previous record. However, this season the supply of beer has returned to normal from the end of May. Overall, beer has brought a huge amount in the state exchequer for the Excise Department.
