Will leave no stone unturned to popularize chess in India: Anurag Thakur MPNRC

Union Sports Minister, Anurag Thakur on Wednesday reiterated that as a sports lover, he will leave no stone unturned to popularize the game of chess in India.

India is all set to host the 44th FIDE Chess Olympiad in Chennai from 28 July to 10 August this year and to promote the sport across the country, the Chess Olympiad torch relay is being organized in 75 cities across India.

Thakur was the chief guest at the Dharamsala (HP) stopover of the Chess Olympiad torch relay ceremony on Wednesday morning and the Sports Minister congratulated the All India Chess Federation (AICF) for hosting the Olympiad and giving a chance to young chess enthusiasts . “Chess in India has a long heritage and history. We started from Chaturanga to Shatrunj,” Thakur said while addressing a gathering at HPCA. “For the first time in the history of Chess Olympiad, India is hosting the event. And what can be a better occasion than the Amrit Mahotsav of Azadi. A total of 188 countries, more than 2,000 players and 1,000 officials will visit India during the Chess Olympiad. I congratulate AICF for this move and thank the young chess enthusiast for their success. I look forward to meeting senior counterparts and Grandmasters.

A gathering of 500 people including school students at HPCA, athletes from Sai Kendra Dharamshala, NYKS volunteers and youth from Himachal Chess Federation participated in the event. Chess Grandmaster Deep Sengupta was present to hand over the torch to Thakur and take it to Shimla later in the day.

Recalling the torch relay launch ceremony, Thakur said, “Hon’ble PM Modi ji launched this historic torch relay and on that day around 10,000 people were present to watch the event live. Now we have to take this flame to every nook and corner of the country and spread this game to every nook and corner of India.

“As the Union Sports Minister and sports lover, I will ensure that no stone is left unturned in popularizing chess in Himachal and India.”
